Dear Fine Arts Families and Local Theatre Supporters,

For years, the MHS costume shop has fallen into disarray due to changeover in directors and lack of a sustainable organizational system. Sadly, the costume shop evolved into a frustrating collection of cumbersome bins, overstuffed immovable racks, and a host of other impractical organizational schemes. To say the students who work on costume crew have been overwhelmed the last few years is an understatement.
When I took over drama last year, I resolved to remedy this problem, and thanks to the help of some our renovation construction workers, we have a chance to finally reinvent and reorganize the costume shop after decades to make it a user-friendly place that better serves our high school drama/musical events, our community theatre groups, and other school groups interested in performing staged events. To that end, we are looking for TEN adult volunteers and up to TEN students to spend a day with the Drama Department on Saturday, Sept. 22nd from 10:30 AM – 4:30 PM to tackle the biggest job of sorting the hugely jumbled collection of hats, shoes, dresses, coats, scarves, gloves, ties, etc. into categories. The job will be a dusty one, but when done, we’ll have gone through our entire inventory to finally get items where they belong in a tidier, cleaner system of organization.
SIGNUP LINK #1 for the Sept. 22nd MHS Costume Shop Sorting Party:
We’re also looking for the help of FOUR to SIX adults and up to FOUR students who are handy with power tools and construction for a different volunteer day, Saturday, October 6 from 10:30 AM – 4:30 PM. On this day, the goal is to build a large sturdy wall shelf (approx. 25′ long x 8′ high with 4-6 levels) for our many clear tupperware bins, and to construct 2-3 simple but functional fitting rooms for students to try on costumes. I would ask for the help of two volunteers who could visit with me at least a week in advance of this day to help design the wall shelf so I know what to buy from the lumber yard.
SIGNUP LINK #2 for the Oct. 6th MHS Costume Shop Construction Crew:
This is a once-in-many-decades chance for us to give our school and community a costume shop that is the envy of other Division 1 school drama departments and empowers those who use it to bolster their productions. If you could see the look on our students’ faces already when they see the vision of the new costume shop starting to take shape, it’s really satisfying. I hope you will consider joining us if your schedule allows.  Lunch will be served on both days.
Thank you humbly for your support of our fine arts programs,
Julie Hanisch
MHS Drama Director and PAC Manager
